Before there was a town, there was a swamp. They drained it, built on it, and named what grew there after the Spanish conquistador who first laid eyes on the Pacific. Balboa became the administrative heart of the Canal Zone — a city carved from the isthmus in the same year the Canal opened to the world.
MCMXIV. 1914. Built where nothing should have been.
This piece looks down from Ancon Hill at what they built — and what Zonians called home for nearly a century.
