On June 16, 1923, Quarry Heights Military Reservation stood as a vital U.S. Army outpost in the Panama Canal Zone, perched on the terraced slopes of Ancon Hill. Established in 1919, the base originated in 1909 when the Isthmian Canal Commission quarried rock for the canal’s Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks. By 1923, it served as the headquarters for the U.S. Army Panama Canal Department, overseeing the defense of the newly opened Panama Canal, a critical global trade artery. The reservation featured barracks, officers’ quarters, and administrative buildings, many repurposed from wooden canal-era structures, blending French and American architectural styles suited to the tropical climate. With its strategic vantage point overlooking the Pacific and Panama City, Quarry Heights embodied America’s commitment to safeguarding the canal, a testament to military presence and engineering triumph.
